Robustness evaluation of crashworthiness load cases

Since 2007, CAE-based stochastic robustness evaluation using optiSLang has been conducted to analyse structural crash load cases at Daimler AG. Thus, the robustness of optimized designs can be assured towards unavoidable scatters of crash test conditions such as production or material (e.g. sheet thickness) constraints.

Only the consideration of scattering local stiffness and fatigue strength variation as well as the scatter of the impact angle of the barrier made ​​it possible to simulate the real phenomenon of the experiment in the virtual model. Thereafter, the stiffness and fatigue strength could be improved.

Once experimental phenomena and their causes have been successfully identified with the help of robustness evaluation, the methodology is increasingly used for computational testing in the virtual product development prior to the real prototyping.
